Alex Ferguson's Last
Chewing Gum Sold For N94 Million...
A piece of
chewing gum purportedly to be the last used by Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester
United manager has reportedly sold for over $600,000( N94 Million).
Fergie, who
was renowned for his chewing on the sidelines, oversaw the Red Devils' last EPL
game of the season yesterday, after 26 years at the helm of the club. As he was
celebrating his side's dramatic 5-5 draw with West Bromwich Albion, a fan laid
claim to the bizarre souvenir and immediately offered it for auction on eBay,
in a custom-made case.
The item
description read: “Used chewing gum: RARE. Recovered from The Hawthorns. Clear
perspex/wooden case. Unofficial merchandise, rumoured to belong to Sir Alex.
After 1,500 games of intense chewing as manager of Man Utd, here lies Fegie’s
last piece of chewing gum. All proceeds go to the MU Foundation charity. Happy
bidding.”
British
newspaper The Metro has reported that the item sold for $608,000 overnight. The
Manchester United Foundation helps disadvantaged youth in the Manchester area.
Reports of the sale came as Ferguson headed into retirement with another gong -
the Premier League manager of the year award.
Ferguson picked
up the League Manager Association's honour on Monday.
At the
reception the 71-year-old said he was relieved celebrations to mark his
retirement were over.
"It has
been overwhelming," he told the awards dinner in London 24 hours after his
last match in charge of United, Sunday's 5-5 draw at West Brom.
"The
club has been fantastic and congratulations to West Brom with the way they
handled yesterday.
"In a
way I am glad it is all over now - because it has been a very hard week.
"I
think (West Brom manager) Steve Clarke should get an award because anyone who
scores five against United deserves it."
