Wildlife biologist Toby Burke, 48, his wife and three children, the youngest of them 7 months old, were on a bird-watching trip along the Alaskan Kasilof River Beach when they saw a large brown bear bounding toward them. Keeping his cool, the unarmed father told his family to stand behind him as he went on the offensive, striking the bear in the face. The animal eventually ran away and was shot dead by troopers.
